DFL champions diversity

#Inclusion

DFL practices what we call transformational diversity: we don't just try to be more diverse, we work to be the most diverse.

Diversity isn't just about people who look different than us, it's about learning how to value and include people with different lived experiences, talents, and abilities.

Working to be more diverse and inclusive is smart business: a growing body of evidence shows the major value inclusive teams bring to customers and shareholders. Read about some of the many studies showing the benefits to business from creating inclusive, diverse teams on the Harvard Business Review site.

DFL was chosen as one of the programs exemplifying the best of UW's values for the 2017-2020 "Be Boundless" global campaign

How DFL Works

Product Dev

DFL engages in long-term projects, and each new cohort of student interns raises the bar until they're ready to ship. It's an intense experience that requires students to push beyond what they thought they could achieve.

Students intern in the DFL for a minimum of 2 academic quarters to ensure they gain the full benefit of the experience, and most students stay for much longer.

DFL "Emergency Developer" Hossam Basiony posted a great recap on LinkedIn about his epic 2-year software development internship with the lab , where he worked on everything from networking code to graphics rendering to AI and machine learning.
